The tally of fatalities from the freight aircraft which ignited and went down has reached 13, per official reports.
City Leader's Statement
While en route to the Workers’ memorial service, I was informed of a 13th person that lost their life as a consequence of the aircraft accident,” wrote the municipal leader in a social media post. “My thoughts are with the loved ones, companions and colleagues of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will overcome this together.”
Victims Identified
A statement from UPS named the officers aboard the aircraft as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our thoughts reach out to all staff member who has been touched and everyone in our Louisville area – supporting you and making sure you receive the support and assistance you need is our priority,” the company’s message expressed.
Probe Findings
Government investigators revealed that the UPS cargo plane’s left wing caught fire and an power plant separated shortly after takeoff from the aviation hub, leading to the plane to plummet and burst into a fireball.
The NTSB has said it is probing the aircraft’s maintenance history, that was in Texas for repairs weeks prior to the accident.
Aviation records indicated the jet was on the ground in that location from 3 September to last week.
“We are aware that this aircraft was present in the facility,” remarked an NTSB member on Thursday, without providing a specific date range. “We will review each aspect of service that was performed, from the Texas time, straight to the date of the flight.”
Recovery of Vital Components
The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were found, and the engine was located on the runway.
The recorders – known as flight recorders – were constructed to survive collision damage and intense fire from fires, and they looked to be in one piece when found within the wreckage. Investigators will examining data from the recorders.
Jet’s last data recordings displayed an altitude of that level and a rate of 210 miles per hour before the crash.
Maintenance History
Per FAA records dated last month, a crack on a structural piece within the tank area required fixes.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which stated it supplies structural repairs for UPS’s MD-11 and operates a service location in Texas, declined to speak, but said it would cooperate fully when investigators contacted it.
Operations Resume
At the same time, UPS Worldport operations restarted Wednesday night with its Next Day Air or night sort process, official a representative said. The three landing strips at the aviation hub were likewise back in operation.
The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the organization’s most significant. The hub hires more than a large number of workers in the locality, processes numerous aircraft each day and processes over four hundred thousand parcels each hour.
Public Support
A gathering was conducted on the late afternoon of 6 November by the regional Teamsters Union, which acts for staff at the aviation hub, the organization’s biggest shipping facility.
Teamsters Local 89, which supports staff, began the memorial with a moment of silence at 5.14pm, the approximate moment of the incident two days earlier.
“This tragedy was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the mayor spoke to the crowd of two hundred. “No one had a moment to say goodbye to any one of those who we have said farewell to.”
